A Good Uncle Vanya

I really like Richard Nelson and this play fits his style. He's given us a conversational version. Like the Apple Plays, it's like sitting in on a family. Some soliloquies are directed directly at audience members. Jay O. Sanders is magnificent as Vanya. Jon DeVries is very good. Not so much the Sonya nor the Elena. I didn't like Astrov. A fine production -- a little under two hours in a small theater. I had a good time.

I quite liked liked the actresses playing Sonya and Elena. I felt like I was watching a Richard Nelson play with characters named after Chekhov. How much of the play was cut? I know I’ve sat through much longer Uncle Vanyas. For those who want to know this play is being acted at the Frederick Loewe Theater at Hunter College.
