Jefferson Mayes in A Christmas Carol in L.A.

Jefferson Mayes is starring in a new adaptation of Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol at the Geffen Theater in Los Angeles. It's a one-man show, beautifully adapted with a balance of Dickens' narrative prose and dialogue. (I'm so used to seeing straight-ahead adaptations of this story that I had forgotten how funny and sharp Dickens' own writing is throughout.) Mayes does all the roles, switching characters from one line to the next and it is a stunning performance. The staging is almost entirely black, white and grey, evocative of the soot-ridden air of London and includes some cool theatrical stage tricks. It is a delight from start to finish, a truly magical evening.

Let's not forget it's directed by the talented Michael Arden.

Yes, indeed, I should have mentioned that! It's another outstanding directing job.
