"It seems like a completely unnecessary movie, and a weird attempt to spend an insane amount of money in the hope to make more money from this already insanely profitable property. Doing it with stage craft is one thing, and a great way to make this something else besides the animated musical, but to try to put this into a realistic looking, grounded setting and still do the disney songs with talking animals seems very silly."

I agree, but considering the apparently insane amount of money made by the BEAUTY AND THE BEAST remake -- which I found unwatchable and unlistenable based on the first two sequences (I couldn't get past those) -- I'm sure this lamentable trend will continue. Though, of course, some of these remakes -- like this one, with NO human characters -- seem even more unnecessary than others.

I thought the trailer breathtakingly understated and yet elegant. A number of friends posted it on Facebook with genuine excitement and expectation. This film may well reach a whole new generation of children. It has state of the art fx, a stellar cast, and a beautiful and universal story reimagined in a new iteration. Not everyone loves animation, and certainly not every child has access to Taymor’s live staging. Why dub such a potentially audience pleasing project “unnecessary” a full seven months before its release, in the face of such palpable anticipation? Yes, it’s a series of corporate decisions, but all inspiring creativity in gifted collaborators. Not at the top of my list of things to complain about in 2018, on screen or off.
