This could be well worth it. By the time it’s shot and released, we’ll be ready for more Lear.
By the way, wasn’t Emma Thompson marvelous as Goneril in Hopkins’? Nearly erases memories of the brilliant Irene Worth.
Meanwhile, I thought Pacino’s Merchant of Venice had excellent touches. Jeremy Irons was unsurpassable, Fiennes was perfect, and the Jessica throughline was dramaturgically delightful. Bring on that same director’s LEAR. Schreiber as Kent? Patti Lupone as Goneril? And can we give Austin Pendelton the Fool? Or Eddie Murphy?(the fool can be aged). Or Christopher McCann, who was a great fool with Hal Holbrook. How about Holbrook as Gloucester? Or John Douglas Thompson? (With non-color-blindcasting on his two sons...?). With William Hurt as Albany? And how about Dylan Baker and wife as Cornwall and Regan? Phillipa Soo as Cordelia. Or maybe we can work Winona Ryder in there. The two older daughters could definitely be from a first wife.
Exciting.
