The Clintons at TORCH SONG Last Night
Posted by: jmill 09:48 am EST 11/25/18

It was an exciting night at the Hayes last evening. It was almost 8:10, and I was wondering why TORCH SONG had not yet started, as well as why
a few men were just standing in the aisle at the front of the theater looking around. When the cheers started, it took a moment to see what was
happening, then I saw Bill and Hillary Clinton entering from an entrance on the front right side. The audience immediately rose to their feet and greeted them with loud and enthusiastic cheers. They sat in aisle seats around the eighth row or so; I was a couple rows back on the side but
had a good view of their entrance.

At intermission, although secret service agents were always nearby and somewhat blocking the area, a number of theatergoers got by to shake hands or have photos taken. President Clinton, from where I was sitting, seemed to be gracious and accommodating with all of them - he was the one sitting on the aisle. I decided not to attempt to push through the crowd to try to get a picture and a handshake, as nice as those would have been.

After the curtain call, Michael Urie asked the audience to sit and, before delivering the seasonal Broadway Cares solicitation, said how honored the cast was to perform for the 'honored guests' (I'm paraphrasing here) and that the Clintons chose to see their show. The cast applauded the Clintons, and Hillary rose once again to applaud the cast. It was very cool to be there for this night.

As for the show, which I saw a year ago at Second Stage (and many years ago with Harvey), it is, if anything, in even better shape than it was during it's initial off Broadway run. All these years later, the many universal truths Harvey's script highlights about relationships, love, sex, and self awareness remain relevant and insightful today. Act One, with its two scenes, is highly entertaining, and the show soars with the sensational Act Two, highlighted by the theatrical fireworks created in the mother/son battle between the terrific Urie and the wonderful Mercedes Ruehl. Those scenes bounce back and forth between hilarious lines and moments that are immensely moving and highly emotional - tears were flowing on several occasions. Urie has fine tuned his already outstanding Arnold from last year; while the role will always belong to Harvey for those of us of a certain age, Urie is brilliant and in his way makes the role his own. Ruehl is an equal match for Arnold in their Act Two scenes, and I hope both these exceptional performers will be remembered at Tony time in what looks like a highly competitive group of categories this season. The rest of the cast is excellent, and this is a magnificent production of an important and great play.

Did she donate a few hundred thousand from her FOUNDATION to Broadway Cares? Can we stop giving her a standing ovation ? Please?

Standing Ovations are not team activities.

There needn't be any "we" in standing ovations. If you choose to stop giving her one I'm sure she'll somehow get over it. If others choose to do so then you will need to get over it. See how simple life can be?!

Broadway Cares is a fundraising organization that provides grants to other organizations. The Clinton Foundation can give money directly to those other organizations.

If the Clinton Foundation to donated to Broadway Cares or for Broadway Cares to gave money to the Clinton Foundation, it would divert funds from helping people into overhead.

Good point. These middle man organizations can rake it in, but are redundant. People should just directly give to a cause or charity imo.
