| “HADESTOWN” TO PLAY BROADWAY’S WALTER KERR THEATRE FOLLOWING WIDESPREAD ACCLAIM AT LONDON’S NATIONAL THEATRE NEW MUSICAL BY ANAÏS MITCHELL, DIRECTED BY RACHEL CHAVKIN TO BEGIN PREVIEWS FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2019 FOR A WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 2019 OPENING NIGHT New York, NY (November 27, 2018) – Producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy announced today that Hadestown, the new musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, developed with visionary director and Tony Award® nominee Rachel Chavkin, will transfer this spring to Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street). Preview performances for Hadestown will begin Friday, March 22 ahead of a Wednesday, April 17 official opening night. Casting and ticketing information for the Broadway production will be announced shortly. “The genius of Anaïs Mitchell’s work in Hadestown is that she takes a myth as old as time and gives it a new life so vibrant and relevant that audiences hold their breath, waiting to see how this timeless tale will unfold,” producer Mara Isaacs said. “Rachel Chavkin and the entire creative team have created a pulse-racing world for Anaïs’ joyous and haunting score to live. As we prepare for Broadway, I’m thrilled for New York audiences to see this entirely new production, a raucous and electrifying celebration that is truly a show for our times." Hadestown originated in 2006 as Mitchell’s community theater project that traveled Vermont before gaining a cult following when she turned the songs into an acclaimed album which was called “far and away one of the best records of 2010” (Sunday Times of London). In 2013, Mitchell saw Chavkin’s celebrated Off-Broadway production of Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812, and knew she had found her artistic partner. Together, the two women have transformed Hadestown into a genre-defying new musical that blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine a sweeping ancient tale. Hadestown electrified audiences with its 2016 world premiere at New York Theatre Workshop before receiving its Canadian premiere at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre in 2017. The National Theatre provided further development to Hadestown in London and the show is currently playing at the National’s Olivier Theatre through Saturday, January 26, 2019, before it’s eagerly anticipated Broadway debut. Hadestown follows two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — as it invites audiences on an epic journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit nature against industry, faith against doubt, and love against fear. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Welcome to the intriguing and beautiful world of “your next musical theater obsession” (Vogue). The creative team for Broadway will feature Drama Desk Award nominee Rachel Hauck (set design), three-time Tony Award nominee Michael Krass (costume design), Tony Award winner Bradley King (lighting design), Tony Award nominee Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz (sound design), Bessie Award® winner David Neumann (choreography), Liam Robinson (music direction and vocal arrangements), Michael Chorney, Todd Sickafoose (arrangements and orchestrations), Ken Cerniglia (dramaturgy), and Stewart/Whitley (casting). Hadestown was developed with funding from the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center and was further developed by The Ground Floor at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Hadestown was co-conceived by Ben t. Matchstick. The Hadestown live original cast recording is available in stores and digitally. | I am really surprised to read Hadestown is opening on Broadway, I saw it or rather sat through it a week ago in London. I went in expecting SOMETHING, I mean 10 years in development and left very disappointed. I almost left at intermission, I was so bored durning act one. I keep thinking I had watched Follies on this stage a year ago and now I am watching this tiny little musical, on this huge stage, without much drama and very unexciting score. The audience reaction at the performance I attended was tepid to say the least long with the London reviews. “The genius of Anaïs Mitchell’s work in Hadestown is that she takes a myth as old as time and gives it a new life so vibrant and relevant that audiences hold their breath, waiting to see how this timeless tale will unfold,” At no time was I holding my breath, I knew how the story would end since the myth is as old as time. | |

| I knew how the story would end since the myth is as old as time. Yes, but if you know the history of how that myth has been dramatized over time, you will know there are different endings. ;-) Plus, we know the ending of a good deal of stories, and/or we can often sense where things will end up. The real fin is in how you wind up there. I think it would be valid to say that for you, the show's journey didn't compel you, but you can't just blame it on "I know how it ends." |

| Well that's a real shame. The NYTW production was one of my favorite shows of the last ten years, at least. I play the cast recording on a regular basis. Maybe it's hampered by the new staging. | |

| The Oliver Theatre is HUGE much bigger than the Kerr, the production used all the great stage machinery the Oliver has to offer, the turn tables the drum etc. The set for the his production was really unattractive I sense the staging would have worked much better on an empty stage maybe like at NYTW. | |

| I was in London for work and I got to see the first preview. I had loved it at NYTW but I hated it this time. Amber Gray is still the best actress in the world for me (even after that awful Chita Rivera-like number at the top of Act II) but the musical is a mess. Bloated, a very miscast hero, endless and pointless choreography. Someone on a British board wrote that Noblezada always looks like she just woke up and still has not had coffee. And yes, that stage was one ugly revolving-revolting set but Orpheus' high notes will forever etched in my brain and not in a good way. And, worse of all, it was my husband's favorite musical so I will be seeing a third time. Sometimes off-Broadway is fine for some works, high notes might work on a very small space and quirky staging is charming but, in this case, something went seriously wrong with the transfer. Everything that had worked so wonderful for Comet in all of its incarnations (big fan here) failed to materialize here. Not a good day, the racist lady from Miss. won....and I am in a very bad mood. But Hadestown at the NT was not the charming, beautiful musical that it was downtown. |

| Circle would have been great for the original design, but they've gone to great ends to make it into a proscenium show. For what it's worth, I was bored by the original production based on the writing, so I don't know that the change in production style would necessarily change the audience reaction. |

| We're pretty much out of theaters that are currently known to be available for the spring, aren't we? Barring closing announcements for immediately after the holidays. | |

| Once on this island is under performing. Fun home was modified from public for circle. I did like north country and it could easily be staged in the round. The question is if it could make enough money with limited seats. It’s smal show so it wouldn’t be a huge cost to transfer. I think the only other theaters that could become available are broadhurst and Lunt Fontaine. Anastasia isn’t doing great business, but summer is dismal. Thanksgiving week was in $400ks. At least Anastasia increased to $800ks. Waitress and beautiful are slow but will probably stay open through spring. |
