I have yet to see a Pimpernel to beat Douglas Sills' original, which was a sparkling high point of even PIMPERNEL 1.0, which was, generally, a pretty dismal affair all around. I predicted huge stardom for Sills based on the way he so effortlessly carried such a dog of a show on his shoulders, seemingly without effort. I'm still disappointed that that never happened.
I wonder, if they'd opened with 2.0 or even 1.5, if giving that performance in a better received version of the piece would have made a difference.
Bryan Batt, who stood by for Sills, came pretty close, as well. I remember thinking that I'd had no idea that Batt could sing like that. |
