There is no transparency as to how the online lotteries work. Some shows do not disclose the number of tickets available. And most shows don't disclose what happens to unclaimed lottery seats (Hamilton sells them to the standby line at full price). I believe Harry Potter is the only show that will continue "drawing" names until all unclaimed seats are sold. How many entrants are out of state and have no intention to see the show? How many entrants decide after entering they don't want to really see the show and forfeit the ticket?
At least with the in-person lottery, the odds were better, and people had to "work" to win the ticket (i.e., by showing up). It also prevented leftover tickets. To me, there are to many "what happens if . . ." with the online lotteries. I think to eliminate "ghost" entries, people should be required to enter the payment information at the time they enter, and then their "winning" email simply be a confirmation of the sale. |
