BURN THIS will be playing there; Are the seats/sections that are to be avoided/ what are the best seats?

One thing about the Hudson is it feels super-intimate with the mezzanine quite close to the stage. They don't use the boxes (the sightlines would be particularly bad) but otherwise it's not as desperately urgent to find a good seat as in some other, larger, more challenging theatres.

I felt kind of far from the stage in the mezzanine and didn’t like sitting on the mezz side when I saw a play there.

Other times I sat downstairs which was fine.

I agree. It’s a lovely, audience-friendly theater.

We saw "Head Over Heels" from the last row of the second balcony. Aside from an appalling lack of leg space - (and I'm not usually one to complain, as I'm reasonably compact, but I wonder how someone who is tall and/or not skinny would fare - someone in the row below us compensated by putting his legs on the feet in front of/below him) - the view was delightful. We felt neither too far away nor too high up.

Aside from an appalling lack of leg space

This is apparently quite variable--I distinctly remember when on a tour of the Hudson commenting on how roomy it was in the front of the orchestra, with a good extra 6-8 inches in front of my knees (I'd spent the night before with the knees wedged against the back of a chair at the Belasco). I think I was sitting in the third row, but it looked much the same for the rows in front/back of me. I guess the balcony is tighter together (perhaps so that the back rows are closer than they'd otherwise be!)
