| Aw, why did you have to diss “A Catered Affair,” a lovely little musical that benefitted from John Doyle’s minimalist sensibility. I suppose that it might not have gotten to Broadway without Harvey in it, and Harvey’s presence may well have scuttled it, but it was a lovely score and a pleasant diversion. | Aw, why did you have to diss “A Catered Affair,” a lovely little musical Um, 'cause I didn't care for it--and ATC seemed equally divided between those who loved it, and those who loved Cry-Baby, so ever since it's been a bit of a litmus taste for whether people's tastes will align with mine. We're much more likely to agree if you thought A Catered Affair was dull, ahistorically unbelievable, with annoying characters, and that Cry-Baby (while not perfect--neither side vouched for perfection) was almost entirely fun, with dynamic choreography, some hilarious songs, and good-looking distracting dancers (my first experience of a young Spencer Liff). So it's my go-to diss, in this context. Of course it's not nearly as bad as something like Lestat, so gloriously awful that I gleefully rushed back at Act Two to see what the new depths would be, or, in a different way, The Times They Are A Chaning' which managed to make me feel somehow dirty and wrong for even being there. |

| Ok, we’ll have to agree to disagree. I saw the tryout of “Cry Baby” at La Jolla Playhouse and didn’t like it at all. I do appreciate that others adore it, though. Glad you are one of those. Bill, in San Diego |
