I was not a fan of Summer. And I thought The Cher Show was a total bore. If there was power there, I missed it. Maybe if you are a huge fan of one of these women, the show carries deeper meaning to you. For me, as someone who likes some of their songs and doesn’t feel much more than that, I didn’t get it. What I really would have loved to see more of, and that I felt they glossed over, was her work as an actress in Silkwood, Mask, etc. and what that felt like for her. Also, the actress who played the youngest version of Cher just rubbed me the wrong way. Her voice felt forced, everything felt forced.
The jukebox show that I think will outdo both of these is Ain’t Too Proud. I saw it in Berkeley. Not a work of art, and the book felt very by the numbers, but when they sang and danced, it was heaven. Pure energy. And power! And I think there is a much larger audience for The Temptations/Motown than either Cher or Donna Sunmer. |
