Teachout on Melissa Errico’s ‘Sondheim Sublime’
Posted by: Clancy 02:35 am EST 11/29/18

A rave.
------------
“Sondheim Sublime” is the best all-Sondheim album ever recorded, a program of 15 songs in which radiantly warm singing and sensitive, intelligent interpretation are tightly and inseparably entwined.

I couldn't read the full review, but I assume that pull quote is in reference to non-cast recordings / soundtracks. Honestly, though, I don't know how an album with arrangements for a tiny band can be the best all-Sondheim album EVER recorded. I guess I'm not a huge cabaret fan, but for me, especially with our greatest living composer, who has worked with some of the best orchestrators in the world, "the best" would have to be recorded with a full orchestra.

I know what you mean, but I also assume the viewer is talking about solo singer albums dedicated to all Sondheim material, and (a) there probably aren't a whole lot of those, plus (b) I imagine few if any of them feature full orchestras playing the original orchestrations.

I saw her sing the album live at 54 Below at her premiere on Nov, 1, the day before the album dropped, and her Sondheim Sublime was indeed sublime. I'd love to see her cast in a leading role again on Broadway.
