Broadway At Christmas
Posted by: jtong43 03:18 pm EST 11/29/18

I have never spent Christmas in NYC. I am thinking about taking my daughter this year. Is it just too crazy busy then? Do most of the shows play that day? Would anything be at the ticket booth or does everything sell out? We are thinking about going ahead and booking hotel now just to make sure we get a room.
I see it as a once in a lifetime treat. We usually get tickets for one show before we go and pick up others at Times Square.

My thoughts: It's a mixed bag. Yes, a lot of people are preoccupied/busy with Christmas so there's less an audience for some shows; BUT there's a lot of people who come to NYC for Christmas AND a lot of people who do not celebrate Christmas (for example: Jews) looking for something to do. My general thought is you're not going to get deals for family-oriented shows; you may have better luck for deals on more serious offerings or plays. The other variable I would add is that with a lot of shows closing in early January you may be competing with people who always meant to see a closing show or are returning for one last visit.

Here is the holiday week schedule for Broadway. There are no shows playing on Christmas Day, but many have a Friday matinee that week. I would guess that the Friday, Saturday and Sunday shows will not have a lot at the TKTS booth, but you never know. Ticket prices over the holidays are often jacked up a bit. Have a great time, and maybe you can still get discount tickets for Once on This Island, which is unfortunately closing in early January. It is a very special production.

I must be brain dead. I Googled "Broadway Christmas week schedule," and one came up, which I should have looked at more closely, but just checked Christmas day. Please excuse my big error. I should read things more carefully.

With Christmas on Tuesday, I would pick that weekend. It seems that people are more busy shopping than seeing shows. The week between Christmas and New Years is premium priced and a lot sell out. I’d check last years weekly grosses for the two weeks to get an idea of the difference. Most shows are blackout for discounts for a lot of this period.

Of course 5th ave is a must day and night. Rockefeller center with tree and ice skating rink and radio city show. But sacks lights up the entire building with lights and the windows have themes. And visit st Patrick’s cathedral. There is the America girl store (which has extra events to go to so check out the website) which will be packed before Xmas and I think fao shwartz opened a seasonal store depending on your daughters age.
