| Kaye's recording on BROADWAY SHOWSTOPPERS, a John McGlinn anthology on EMI was the first version of the song that I heard. Anderson had the role of First Lady on WHITE HOUSE CANTATA. I prefer Kaye's . She's funny(er), and you wouldn't need the lyrics in front of you to understand what she's singing...The old saying about opera singers(Dam the consonants, full vowel sounds ahead) does seem to apply...... On Miss Streisand's new CD, Walls, she recorded "Take Care of This House" from 1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE and she does a lovely job on it. Some singers start with the phrase "Take care of...Miss Streisand includes the verse, which was what Mr. Bernstein preferred. When producer Ben Bagley made a Leonard Bernstein revisited CD, the maestro asked him to record the song(with Angelina Reux) with the verse and the young black child whom Abigail Adams shared the scene with..... Streisand's album is fine. I purchased it just to hear her version of "Take Care... I was going to skip purchasing it, because one of the tracks is the John Lennon song "ImAGINE,"a great favorite of many many People; but by me, it's a dystopia set to a lovely melody. anyway,I'd like to hear what people think of Miss Streisand's version of Take care of this House. | |

| I think Barbra’s rendition is extraordinarily beautiful and moving. She is pouring her heart and soul into it and reminds one that she is an actress who sings. It’s amazing to see her powers of interpretation and vocal prowess undiminished at age 76. | |

| If you want to hear the definitive version of "Take Care of This House," I'd recommend Patricia Routledge's recording on "An Evening with Alan Jay Lerner," recorded live at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, on June 7, 1987. It does not include however the introductory verse that bmc refers to below. | |

| I don't think June Anderson had too much experience with comedy, as she was known more for things like Lucia di Lammermoor. I think that she and Thomas Hampson are just serviceable on that recording, but it does show that "1600 Pennsylvania" had some really terrific music in it. "Take Care of this House" is nice, but I'd rather hear more of the other material from the show; for years it was the only song the Bernstein estate allowed to be recorded and acknowledged to actually be from that show. I believe that Bernstein used a lot of music from that show in some of his later works including the opera "A Quiet Place". Of course, I can tell you that I've heard Patricia Routledge's version of "Duet for One", though maybe I should post this down by the noxious HELL/HELLER thread in more detail, so that it would finally be the breaking point to have it deleted in its entirety. | |

| Judy Kaye's version is certainly the best recorded version. Not only is she a terrific singer but she understands the sublime comedy of the number I've heard Routledge's live performance and it's thrilling to hear the audience suddenly come alive and realize they are listening to an honest to god show stopper in the midst of a rather lumpy evening. I've heard other scatted performances of some other songs. Sarah Brightman, of all people, has a lovely version of Lud's Wedding on her excellent "Songs That Got Away" album. | |
