Ken Berry, best known for his many TV appearances, made his Broadway debut in ''The Billy Barnes Revue'' (1959), co-starring with his future wife, Jackie Joseph, and Bert Convy. But he first made his mark as a terrific tap dancer (see brief video below), once heralded as the ''next Gene Kelly.'' He once opened in Vegas for Abbott & Costello. Along the way, he was championed by Leonard Nimoy, Arthur Godfrey, Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett. Berry played Prince Dauntless, opposite Burnett, in the 1972 TV version of ''Once Upon a Mattress.'' And Berry toured in ''George M!,'' ''I Do, I Do'' and ''The Music Man.''

Not to mention his two appearances with the Kenley Players: SUGAR in 1975, alongside Mickey Rooney and Elaine Joyce; and GEORGE M! in 1981.

I saw him in three shows during the 1970s - Oklahoma, Where's Charley, and Sugar. Oklahoma was my favorite - he and his wife (then), Jackie Joseph played Will Parker and Ado Annie - they were hilarious together. RIP.

I remember there was talk of Berry starring in a film version of THE BOY FRIEND with Debbie Reynolds in the late '60s. That would have been fun.

And, as is the case with many great dancers, a master of physical comedy. His pratfalls on F TROOP delighted my childhood.

I remember enjoying his dancing and his acting/presence on shows. I also recall a kind of nasty joke someone said on tv by some rather big dancer or musical star perhaps on Johnny Carson or another talk show, if I recall. They said something along the lines that if Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and a few others died in a plane crash or earthquake or something, that Ken Berry would be the greatest living dancer. Berry was very good indeed, and I didn't like that someone was making a joke at his expense, since it was obvious that while he didn't reach the heights of movie musical stardom, he was a damn good dancer. Anyone else recall this?

He was so talented you didn't notice the craft beneath the effect - deft at physical comedy, insightful about the type of humor needing to be employed, felicitous with delivery.

A titanic loss.
