Thanks re the cabaletta. I wasnt sure. I directed this opera once, and the tenor was in favor of singing the entire cabaletta , as was I - it has always seemed necessary for plot and character. But the conductor refused. Go figure. In any event, they could have opened the 'traditional cuts' if they hadn't opted for two intermission 'so we could hear the opera as Verdi intended'. I'm sure if no intermission was an option in 1853, Verdi might have jumped at it/
