That’s a good question, Michael, but I don’t know how Verdi felt. While I agree that Germont’s cabaletta is pretty forgettable, Violetta’s second verse to “Ah, fors e lui” is kind of important to understanding her psyche, as is Alfredo’s cabaletta. Plus, when Alfredo’s cabaletta is cut, it necessitates an added bit of non Verdi music or just cuts abruptly to Violetta’s entrance. Both solutions damage the structure.
As for the 150 years of cutting, I understand, but longevity does not equate “good” or “satisfactory.” Remember: they used to routinely cut the norn scene and the Waltraute scene as well in Götterdämmerung!
