I'm not Alan Scott, but I saw a production that used the Caird version. I found it extremely wordy and ineffective. I've never seen a production of the show that really worked; one problem is that the original book is short, light and ironic, while the stage versions tend to be long and windy. And the protagonist just isn't very interesting, which productions have tried to compensate for by making Voltaire/Pangloss a tour de force role like that of Sid Caesar in Little Me (a show that suffers from much the same problem). The Prince production in the 70's was the most successful I've seen, but even that had problems.
