You obviously haven't been around any millennials lately--many of my students prefer "they," even if "they" have a fixed sense of gender. I asked an historical linguist her thoughts and she told me that there is long historical precedent for the singular use of "they." I don't think it costs anything to be respectful of how people would like to be addressed or referred to. Language is always changing. Get with it or get over it, I say.
