It's fair to say that, going forward, new criticisms of the property will become more prominent. The attached essay, by the academic Roxane Gay, who is black, ran in the Times Book Review earlier this year. One might not necessarily react to the book in the same way, but her point of view is worth listening to. It's also worth noting that, even early on, there were prominent naysayers. Flannery O'Connor, one of the most praised American authors of the 20th century, had this to say: "For a child’s book it does all right. It’s interesting that all the folks that are buying it don’t know they’re reading a child’s book. Somebody ought to say what it is.”
