"A suit for Tom at the trial is an absurd choice and shows no understanding of the rules of Jim Crow in the 1930s, when the story takes place. A man of Robinson's station would be seen as "uppity" and worse if he wore anything fancier than clean overalls and a clean shirt into the courtroom. If Atticus put him in a suit, it would doom him with the all-white jury of the time."
