You are bold and I love it! :-) I hope you don't get too flamed for Spider Woman. I have often heard this sentiment regarding your other two examples, but never Chita/Vanessa. To be fair, I didn't see Vanessa Williams but I did see Chita and she was perfection. I much prefer listening to her cast recording more than Vanessa's, but grateful we have them both.

Another I have heard often is Jonathan Pryce in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This was around the time they introduced the replacement Tony award and it seemed to many he was the frontrunner although that award never came to be. Alas, I only saw Lithgow, who I liked a lot.

Two who I DID see, but no one was talking about are Marin Mazzie replacing Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in Man of La Mancha and Sarah Gettelfinger replacing Jane Krakowski in Nine. Many will disagree I'm sure. Aldonza is written in such an odd place for the voice that it's very hard to pull off I think. One of Mazzie's hallmarks was an effortless range up and down the scale with seemingly no break and a masterful ability to mix head voice and belting. While competent, Mastantonio just simply doesn't have that ability. With Gettelfinger it was more in the acting. Her slightly more confident and secure characterization changed the balance of the show in such a way that it makes Guido's choosing of his wife at the end more plausible. Krakowski was so vulnerable and heartbreaking, you really rooted for her. Which is fine, but the show works better if the audience can get behind Guido choosing his wife. Also Krakowski did a terrible accent, I'm sorry to say, because I do really like her.
