"More recently, in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, Aaron Lazar’s Fabrizio was not only sung beautifully, but he seemed to inhabit the character with remarkable spontaneity and life. Katie Clarke’s Clara wasn’t as well sung as Kelli O’Hara’s, but she seemed more in tune with the character, more childlike, and more lost and confused when appropriate. And though I wouldn’t say that understudy and alternate Patti Cohenour was better than Victoria Clark as Margaret, she gave a gentler and quieter performance that was very beautiful."

I am with you here on all counts. When I first saw THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, I thought Matthew Morrison was fine as Fabrizio -- maybe partly because I loved the show so much in my first experience of it. But both of the other other performers I saw in the role were far superior vocally, acting-wise, and in terms of type. Aaron Lazar was terrific, and even better was David Burnham, who sang the part best of all and was pretty much perfect for it in every respect. He even looked Italian, although he is not! (David was not a replacement in the role on Broadway, he did the tour.)

And yes, Patti Cohenour was wonderful as Margaret -- not superior to Victoria Clark, but wonderful in her own way(s). Ditto Christine Andreas, who was Margaret on the tour.

There are so many other examples I could name, but here's one stellar example that just popped into my head: Sandy Duncan as Roxie in CHICAGO.
