| Unlike Reba and Fantasia—both of whom (deservedly) generated a lot of press and were frequently discussed as superior to their predecessors—some of my favorite replacements haven’t captured headlines or widespread acclaim. Some have even been panned. They include: Linda Lavin (replacing the also brilliant and totally different Tyne Daly) as Rose in the 1989 Gypsy (always a controversial entry in this discussion) Brian (then no Stokes) Mitchell (replacing Anthony Crivello) as Valentin in Kiss of the Spider Woman Emma Stone and Sienna Miller (replacing Michelle Williams) as Sally Bowles in Roundabout’s 2014 Cabaret J. Harrison Ghee as Lola in Kinky Boots Though I certainly agree with all those who have mentioned Sally Field’s performance in The Goat, I’m surprised that no one has also mentioned Bill Irwin (replacing Bill Pullman) whose performance still haunts me and who was such an integral part of Field’s performance. Despite their being comparably minor roles, I’d also add to the list R. Bean (replacing D. Sabella) as Mary Sunshine in the Chicago revival; Melinda Hull (replacing Jeanine LaManna) as Nickie in the 2005 (?) Sweet Charity; and Jennifer Simard (replacing Kerry Butler) as the adult women in Mean Girls. And, though she was technically an alternate (and I truly did love them both), Donna Murphy will forever be my Dolly. |
