Elaine Stritch was one of those eccentric performers who make every role their own in a "larger than life" sense.
We don't have so many of these people anymore, but two generations ago the musical was full of them.
You could argue that even Ethel Merman and Mary Martin were self-aggrandizing in the way they held the stage,
as if sending valentines to themselves. Yet they were enchanting personalities.
You may feel that Stritch was the irritating version simply because she wasn't exactly enchanting, though she was
fascinating and unique. Special.
And one person's special is another person's tiresome. |
