I do not remember the Matthau comparison being made about Broderick in Torch Song Trilogy — perhaps I've forgotten — but it was definitely made when he opened in Brighton Beach Memoirs, even though his reviews were mostly favorable and he won a Tony.
I saw Stevens as David in Torch Song, and I remember liking him. I think he seemed more believable as a street kid than the guy in the current production does. He may be a good actor in the right role, but he seems completely wrong in this role. |
