I don't think Jack di Falco looks like a pick-up or a rent boy, but I do agree he is miscast.

The original Torch Song Trilogy ran for some time with replacement Arnolds, few or even none of whom were much like Fierstein, even if some tried to imitate certain things about his performance, if only to justify things mentioned in the text, like the voice. I meant to chime in a while ago when there was a thread here in which there was discussion of the lack of textual changes to suit the current production's cast. There weren't changes in the original production either, as far as I know. I saw only one replacement Arnold, but he was very different from Fierstein, yet no textual changes were made, even though the replacement I saw was about as slim and good-looking as Urie, perhaps even more good-looking, though with a different look.

You may recall that the first evening Arnold replacement was David Garrison, who was fired after a few weeks. The guy I saw, Donald Berman, was hired as the evening replacement and was almost fired, but instead they moved him to the matinees and promoted the matinee Arnold to evenings. Anyway, when I saw him after he'd been doing it a while, the audience seemed to love him and gave him a standing ovation and cheers, before standing ovations had become quite so common as they are now (although they were already starting to become more common). I went to see him because he was a friend of a friend (I had met him a couple of times), and I had seen him in some other shows. He was terrific acting the role, but not physically right.
