I think your "7 minutes" is a typo for "17 minutes" (the actual running time), which gives the arranger, Charles Harmon, a lot of room. The
better-known numbers are there--the Jefferson March, Take Care Of This House, Lud's Wedding, and there are also some lesser-known
sections, quite dramatic ones.
All in all, the suite makes a strong argument for the score as sheer music. (There's no singing at all.) Taken out of context, 1600 doesn't
really sound like a musical, but more like an opera. This must be the most distinguished music ever heard in a show that not only
flopped but more or less vanished as a theater piece forever after. |
