| Third song in, Janis Paige’s “You Don’t Know,” about the loss of her husband is Meredith Willson turning a corner onto a darker street. Though its lyric is simplistic, if blisteringly honest, the melody and the last 30 seconds of a 2 minute 16 second song are ravishing. Paige is superb. Though much of this score is boilerplate, if always well crafted, this song nails a character specific emotional epiphany with startling clarity and depth. |
