I hadn't seen Amahl since, probably, the early '60s, which I think was around the time they stopped broadcasting it regularly on TV at Christmas. It was lovely to watch it again on this other Christmas Eve after all these years.

What a gift...thank you SO much! Have never seen this original production, though I have cherished the recording since making a tape of it in college! I wish they would air this as well as the beautiful film from I think 1978 with Teresa Stratas as Mother.

....oddly this one is very rare because Menotti was out of the country when it was filmed and was angry that it was done without his input. Up to this point the show had always aired live, but this time they used the new innovation of video tape to save the show, and this version was rebroadcast three or four times after its initial airing. After the rights reverted back to the composer he took this version and it was never seen again....until now. I know that Martha King (Mother) was very interested in viewing it. I have tried to contact her but it appears that her voice/singing school in CT is not longer in operation and she has not posted on her FB page for several years. I hope she is okay I would love for her to get to see this version of the show, which, despite the composer's protests, I find quite lovely.

BTW, that is Kurt Yaghjian as AMAHL, who appeared in the original Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar from 12 October 1971 to 30 June 1973 as a leper, a reporter and as understudy to Ben Vereen as Judas Iscariot. He was also in the film version.

Thanks for posting this. To clarify, in the film version of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, Kurt Yaghjian plays the fairly large featured role of Annas, one of the high priests -- the one with the really high voice who sings "What then to do about Jesus of Nazareth," etc.

Yes, thank you so much for posting. Amazing that the whole thing is on YouTube. It's incredible how pre-historic the camera work is, but it was 1951 :-) What a wonderful gift.
