Met Opera Rush Tickets
Posted by: fidelio1010 10:33 am EST 12/26/18

I've been buying rush tickets at the met since the program began. The way I understood it was that the Varis rust had paid for 200 tickets for each performance excluding special events like opening night. Today I was informed by the box office that because this evening's performance of Traviata is sold out, there will be no rush tickets available. If they were pre paid for by the trust, how can you re sell them at full price? Please correct me if I am wrong but this seems a little shady or does the Met interpret rules to suite the financial needs of the house?

My understanding was that the program was essentially as you described until Ms. Varis died, and then there was some question about whether the program would continue at all. But it has, only in an apparently modified form, i.e., more dependent on sales than it once was.

To be fair, I can hardly blame them. The Met almost never sells out these days! If a show is really selling out like this, they need to take what revenue they can. There is still the family circle, and standing room, for lower priced options.

It looked like there were some rush tickets this AM -- my fingers just weren't fast enough. The full disclosure page says that there are "at least 100" seats available for Mo-Thu performances. But clearly, they go fast. There are still some standing room seat for tonight at $28 bucks -- but I'm not into standing for 3 hours.

It had nothing to do with your fingers. While it appeared that you could buy them, the box office told me they would not be available for a sold out performance. they have the right to withdraw them.

I don't understand, how could they "withdraw" tickets that are already sold? I have bought rush tickets under the current policy several times over the past few months, and my understanding is that unsold tickets are offered at the rush price of $25, not that any certain number of tickets are reserved to be sold as rush tickets.

I think there is a limit on the number of tickets offered for rush, but yes, if the house is sold out, I'm not sure how the rush works - although it seemed to be open for Traviata yesterday. Went to Pearl Fishers a few weeks back and there were a number of open seats even though the rush was listed as sold out. Some of those may be subscription seats, however.

The website still says to come back at 12 noon. Did you call them and confirm this? I never heard that the number was 200 per performance, but it varies by availability. I believe the trust probably gives a certain amount of funds per season and the Met decides how many to sell each performance depending on supply and demand. I was planning to try at noon.

Up to 200 tickets, based on availability. If they sell out every night, then there are no Rush tickets (the dont). I got Rush for both TRAVIATA and OTELLO on first nights this season. Please note this language in the RUSH rules: The Metropolitan Opera (the “Met") is offering the opportunity to purchase one ticket or one pair (two) of tickets to selected Metropolitan Opera performances at $25.00 per ticket while supplies last and on a first come, first serve basis pursuant to the following terms and conditions (the “Promotion").
