can't log onto Times, but it's probably mentioned that 'in WWII ', the American heroine of On the Town was an Asian American. Per Mary Martin in her autobio', Miss Osato was a great help to Mary Martin in creating her ONE TOUCH OF VENUS performance.

Too bad that the Times obit doesn't mention her acclaimed work as Cocaine Lil in the "Willie the Weeper" portion of Jerome Moross and John Latouche's "Ballet Ballads," which received love letters from most of the critics but only managed a 69-performance run on Broadway in 1948. The show transferred to a commercial run at the Music Box Theatre after opening at the Maxine Elliot Theatre for a strictly limited one-week run produced by a group called the Experimental Theater under a special contract that paid everyone much less than Broadway scale, in effect an early version of Off-Broadway. Broadway producer Cheryl Crawford was a leading force behind the group.
