Two award winning playwrights staged together for the
first time, for a visceral evening of theater.
Presented in an intimate setting in the East Village.

Two Classic Plays About Family – One Unforgettable Event

New York, NY: The Seeing Place Theater, known for intense &
intimate ensemble work, continues its 9th Season with two compelling short plays in one evening
of theater: A NUMBER by Caryl Churchill is a beguiling hour-long psychological thriller that
blends the controversial topic of cloning with a stunning portrait of the relationship between a
father and his sons. 'NIGHT, MOTHER by Marsha Norman is an eloquent, enthralling and
ultimately shattering short play that explores the final hour in the life of a young woman who has
decided that life is no longer worth living.

“We’re excited to pair these important plays together to offer a multi-faceted conversation about
the nature of family,” says Executive Artistic Director, Erin Cronican. “What happens to the root
of the family when one person is pushed to the edge? And who is to blame when a child and
parent are at odds? By pairing these two plays together for one event, we’re deepening the
audience’s experience, drawing connections about family that they may not have seen otherwise.”
With an emphasis on the organic, edgy American style of acting developed by the Group
Theatre, TSP allows audiences to experience modern classics with deeper understanding of how
they relate to the struggles we face today. With that, tickets are as low as $10 as a part of TSP’s
Affordable Theater Initiative, making theater accessible for all.

About The Play, A NUMBER:

Winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Play
Caryl Churchill's A NUMBER is a play that explores the issue of human cloning through the
relationships between a father and his three sons. A tight two-hander taking place in a not-too-far off
future, Churchill's play is a philosophical investigation into free will and the question of nature versus
nurture.

About The Play, ‘NIGHT, MOTHER

Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Tony Award nominee for Best Play.
The play begins with Jessie calmly telling her Mama that by morning she will be dead, as she plans to
commit suicide that very evening. The subsequent dialogue slowly reveals Jessie's life with Mama and the
reasons for her decision, culminating in a disturbing, yet unavoidable, climax.

About The Seeing Place:

Our name "The Seeing Place" is the literal translation of the Greek word for theater (theatron): ". . . the
place where we go to see ourselves." The Seeing Place is an actor-driven company dedicated to exploring
the intersection between the actor's voice and the playwright's words, by reinterpreting masterful works
live and in the moment to make them relevant, visceral, truthful, and accessible to a modern audience.
We live up to our name by engaging our community in a vivid conversation about what makes us human.
Connection. Learning. Humanity. That's what theater is all about.
