Teachout on the Best 2018 Theater
Posted by: Clancy 10:48 pm EST 12/28/18

Tickled to see Terry Teachout's shout-out to Sutton's brother! And that photo of Anika Noni Rose is spectacular enough to be worth looking at on something larger than your phone.

A favor for folks who try the link below. Ideally it will get you past the WSJ firewall, although you may have to close one or two subscription pop-ups.
The last WSJ article I posted got a series of "But there's a paywall!" or "It doesn't work!" comments.
If the link truly doesn't work after clicking to close the pop-ups, could you post a reply to that extent? And if so I'll quit trying to post WSJ articles. Thanks.

For what it's worth, Teachout's article is summed up, sort of (and with his approval), in this aggregation of the best theater lists by some dozen critics

Immediately connects to the paywall, which can't be closed or gotten out of the way. The WSJ paywall is, in my experience, the most impenetrable of barriers.

Ann, thanks for the link. It's great to see the Broadway and Off-Broadway future productions summarized in one place.

I noticed that Teachout said that Girl from the North Country is transferring to Broadway. Is he jumping the gun?

When I saw An Inspector Calls, there was a piece about Stephen Daldry in the program that said that An Inheritance was coming to Broadway in 2019, although the writer of the piece didn't make it sound like he actually spoke to Daldry in putting the article together. It seemed more like a summary of Daldry's work. So maybe that was wishful thinking as opposed to inside information.

I didn't much care for Carmen Jones, but her singing was glorious. Where is this woman's album or Stars in Concert broadcast or moment centerstage on the musical stage?!

She did American Songbook a while back and has recorded an album and DVD with Jason Robert Brown. I bought the album at Brown’s concert at Subculture.

Having said that I wish Rose has a career like Audra’s. She is so talented.

Clancy, the link works! Thank you for posting it. Teachout seems to be making a point of staying away from Broadway, although it seems that other lists mention less Broadway than usual.

I see lots of Broadway on his list

Maybe it's just that there isn't a lot of great Broadway this year....

I appreciate that he covers the area.

One of the greatest performances I ever saw was Elizabeth Ashley in Sweet Bird Of Youth at the Shakespeare Theatre in DC. There really IS a WORLD of theatre out there and nice that it is appreciated.

I think it’s admirable that Terry uses his position to write about regional theater, but I don’t think he actually covers the breadth and depth of the regional scene as much as he claims to. He has reviewed productions in the city where I live on occasion, but he’s never ventured beyond the one or two largest, most established theaters in town.

I saw it with a theatre professional colleague. Des McAnuff and friends were also near us. 6 Broadway professionals of long standing. While we admired some of the stagecraft, and many of the actors, at the end of the day we were bored out of our minds most of the time. I wanted to yell at the stage DONT WHIRL THOSE CAPES AGAIN PLEASE!!!!! Ah well.

(spoilers)

I admired the technical stagecraft of Harry Potter. The "time traveler" effect was stunning even after seeing it so many times. But the script seemed padded, and it could have been several hours shorter.

I thought Anthony Boyle should have won the Tony, though, over Nathan Lane.

I agree with every single thing you use said -- 1. admirable stagecraft, 2. time traveler effect didn't get tired, 3. script padded, 4. could hav been several hours shorter, 5. Anthony Boyle carried that show. I wonder how his replacement will measure up.
One more point, which I guess is obvious -- the show is really for people who are already fans of the books and movies. It's hard to picture this stage play alone turning someone into a similarly rabid fan.

I also agree on all points. Frankly, I'm surprised that HARRY POTTER got away with being a two-parter when, as has been pointed out, the script does absolutely feel padded and the show could easily have been "several hours" shorter -- like, at least three hours shorter, in which case it would have been one show rather than two. And if it HAD been one show rather than two, it might have ended up running years longer than the two shows will run -- although, of course, there will be no way to tell that for sure.

HATED that performance.

But LOVED Anthony Boyle. Great, memorable performance.
