I saw it with a theatre professional colleague. Des McAnuff and friends were also near us. 6 Broadway professionals of long standing. While we admired some of the stagecraft, and many of the actors, at the end of the day we were bored out of our minds most of the time. I wanted to yell at the stage DONT WHIRL THOSE CAPES AGAIN PLEASE!!!!! Ah well.

(spoilers)

I admired the technical stagecraft of Harry Potter. The "time traveler" effect was stunning even after seeing it so many times. But the script seemed padded, and it could have been several hours shorter.

I thought Anthony Boyle should have won the Tony, though, over Nathan Lane.

I agree with every single thing you use said -- 1. admirable stagecraft, 2. time traveler effect didn't get tired, 3. script padded, 4. could hav been several hours shorter, 5. Anthony Boyle carried that show. I wonder how his replacement will measure up.
One more point, which I guess is obvious -- the show is really for people who are already fans of the books and movies. It's hard to picture this stage play alone turning someone into a similarly rabid fan.

I also agree on all points. Frankly, I'm surprised that HARRY POTTER got away with being a two-parter when, as has been pointed out, the script does absolutely feel padded and the show could easily have been "several hours" shorter -- like, at least three hours shorter, in which case it would have been one show rather than two. And if it HAD been one show rather than two, it might have ended up running years longer than the two shows will run -- although, of course, there will be no way to tell that for sure.

HATED that performance.

But LOVED Anthony Boyle. Great, memorable performance.
