Actors are people. They get sick.

Maybe she could have muscled through, maybe not. She’s human. She called out sick to work - something most people have done at some point in their lives. I don’t get the vitriol people post about actors being out.

That's the point--from the audience's point-of-view, she didn't "call out sick;" she didn't show. And she did that much of this short run. Perhaps live theatre isn't a great fit for this actress, particularly if she does have an anxiety disorder. She can certainly continue to earn millions in TV and movies without having to face a live audience.

As for not getting vitriol that people post about actors being out-- the audience has been promised a certain actor and that promise is splashed on ad after ad and article after article. The audience lays out lots of money to see her, not particularly the show she's in.

How do you expect people to react when the actor doesn't show and gives no reason for the absence? Sure, actors are human, but so are audience members.

It is not the theatre's place to say why someone is out. nm

The MET does it all the time.

I also remember clearly when Audra was out of Porgy and Bess, the theatre said specifically that she was sick.

It's a courtesy.

it is not a courtesy; it is an invasion of privacy. if Audra asked that it be announced, then it would have been announced. ditto this woman (p.s. I had never heard of her until this thread so some good comes of everything).

Since we don't know if she was, in fact, sick, I'll just assume she's a lazy actress who hates being in a terrible show.

Is that better?

I'm not saying this is true in this case, but one thing I find extremely annoying is when actors have scheduled absences but the producers won't let anybody know. And then won't give you a refund or exchange when you show up for that planned absence.

I was glad to hear that LCT is giving refunds for Laura Benanti's absences in My Fair Lady.

It's because people remember the days when actors didn't call out as much. Marian Seldes did 1,793 performances of Deathtrap and 1,203 performances of Equus and never missed a show.

People called out back then too. There just wasn’t an Internet to amplify it in real time. And citing one well known example of perfect attendance is entirely anecdotal, but I expect you already know that.

She’s actually been tweeting about pinched nerves and that she was in the ER on Friday
