| My girlfriend and I spent a long drive trying to name a musical for every state. Only restrictions were that the location had to be integral to the major arc of the story/songs, e.g. Caroline or Change gets us Louisiana, but Gypsy does NOT get us Washington. Road musicals don't count since there are multiple locations along the way. We didn't even bother naming shows that got us California or New York because that felt less interesting, but we did find that Iowa was surprisingly popular (State Fair, Music Man, Bridges of Madison County). Please play along and name as many as you can. Debate welcome (does Big River get us Missouri & Arkansas, one, or neither?) Alabama - Scottsboro Boys Alaska - Arizona - Arkansas - Big River (?) California - Singin in the Rain, Sunset Boulevard, Flower Drum Song, etc Colorado - Unsinkable Molly Brown Connecticut - Far From Heaven Delaware - Florida - Georgia - Parade Hawaii - Idaho - Illinois - Chicago Indiana - Iowa - State Fair, Music Man, Bridges of Madison County Kansas - The Wizard of Oz Kentucky - Louisiana - Caroline or Change Maine - Carousel Maryland - Hairspray Massachusetts - Little Women Michigan - Motown Minnesota - Mississippi - Missouri - Meet Me in St. Louis, Big River (?) Montana - Nebraska - Nevada - Honeymoon in Vegas New Hampshire New Jersey - Jersey Boys New Mexico - New York - Company, Guys & Dolls, Hello Dolly, Ragtime, Rent, A Chorus Line, etc etc North Carolina - North Dakota - Ohio - Bye Bye Birdie Oklahoma - Oklahoma Oregon - Pennsylvania - Groundhog Day, Rocky Rhode Island - South Carolina - South Dakota - Tennessee - Memphis Texas - Best Little Whorehouse Utah - Book of Mormon ?? (I think no since the action doesn't really take place there) Vermont - Virginia - Washington - Washington DC - Call Me Madam West Virginia - Wisconsin - Spitfire Grill Wyoming - |

| The Roundabout production's playbill did give the location for 110 in the Shade as being the Texas Panhandle. I know the original production's playbill just said "a western state." I don't know if any productions in between were more specific than the original, or if the revised licensed version (available along with the original) states anything specific in the script. | |

| I can't tell you how much of it takes place there, but George M. Cohan's George Washington, Jr. takes places partly in Rhode Island. If you can count revues, Inside U. S. A. includes sequences in Wyoming and Kentucky, as well as sequences in a bunch of other states for which answers have already been given below. It also includes the song "Rhode Island Is Famous for You," but that was not identified as being sung anywhere (except the theater). |

| Oregon: "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" -- yes, first a film, but later it toured as a stage musical Washington State: "The Golden Apple" "Finian's Rainbow" -- takes place In Missitucky - sort of a fantasy version combination apparently of Mississippi and Kentucky Colorado: "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" Minnesota: "I Remember Mama" "1776" also takes place in Massachusetts whenever Abigail Adams is on stage Georgia and probably South Carolina: Harold Rome's stage musical of "Gone with the Wind" Utah: some of "The Book of Mormon" Michigan: the Henry Ford sequences in "Ragtime" |

| Also, Connecticut: "Mame" when she visits the Upsons at the restricted area which includes Upson Downs; plus the theater where "Man in the Moon" takes place is the Shubert in New Haven, Connecticut. I think I take back "I Remember Mama" which probably is mostly in California -- they refer to relatives in Minnesota though. |

| I now see that the OP said that the show should take primarily in the state, and specifically cited Gypsy as a show that would not count for Washington. | |

| It mostly takes place in Russia, with scenes also in Paris and Chicago. For Alaska, there is the out-of-town closer Bonanza Bound, with book and lyrics by Comden and Green, and music by Saul Chaplin. It ran a week in Philly from December 26, 1947 through January 3, 1948. It left behind an unissued (and decidedly incomplete, just nine songs) RCA cast recording, recorded in Philly because of the impending new Petrillo ban. Later issued on a disc of Comden and Green stuff by some little label. |

|
| Oh, yeah, I guess Foxy doesn't count. FWIW, Bonanza Bound was set in Alaska, although before it was a state. In fact, it wasn't a state during the week Bonanza Bound played in Philly. :) And Bounce does go to Alaska, but reading the OP's post more carefully, I don't think he'd consider Bounce-Road Show-Wise Guys as counting. |
