| Super interesting casting notice for an equity production of "little women" at Cherry Lane in New York. Specifically, the breakdown for Jo says "open but not limited to, non-binary, gender queer, trans and cis-gendered performers." Totally fascinating idea! Obviously depending on the physiology of the person cast we might not get a Sutton Foster high belter for 'Astonishing' (among other things!) but clearly the team knows that. I wonder if they will actively try to cast this non-traditionally - is that the vision from the outset, or are they just expressing an openness to anything? Love this show and this score, and regardless of the casting it sounds like this will be a cool production. Can't wait to see it. |

| It's interesting to me that you chose Sutton Foster (out many other famous actresses who've played Jo) to single out as your example regarding this casting notice. When I saw Foster in that production, it very much felt to me that she'd chosen to play Jo as a 19th Century proto-lesbian character at a time when there really wasn't terminology to describe such things. Her Jo seemed most comfortable dressed in male drag rescuing fair maidens. Her Jo seemed to have little interest in romance or sex with any of the prospects the story presents and only seemed to accept a man's proposal at the end with the greatest reluctance. | |

| I believe the playwright, Kate Hammil, will be playing Jo. J |

| I wouldn’t expect any belting - this is not the musical adaptation that was seen on Broadway in the 2000s. From the casting notice, the writer is Kate Hamill, and it’s “loosely adapted” from the novel. She has adapted a few other classic novels, as well - “Pride & Prejudice” and “Vanity Fair” among them. | |

| It's not the musical; they aren't requesting songs from the auditioning actors, but rather having actors do cold readings of the sides (pages from the script) provided at the audition site. | |
