| It always stuck me as odd that a play that flopped on Broadway and only ran two months was made into such a high profile movie with Streisand no less. (Even before Streisand became interested Debra Winger was set to do it. Stereisand says on the DVD that her then boyfriend was playing golf or something with execs who told him Winger had dropped out. He said Barbra loved the play and might be interested which she was.) | |

| NUTS had a very successful run in Los Angeles in the early 80s at the no-longer L.A. Stage Company, then at the old Las Palmas Theater in Hollywood. I'm pretty sure that was the reason the film version of the play got the traction it did. The actress Karen Austin was excellent in the lead. |

| Yes. I think Karen Austin’s LA revival of NUTS brought it to west coast prominence. But....SPOILER.... Wasn’t the deep dark secret of the play about........ ...... SPOILER ...... incest...? Which wasn’t something plays or films were dealing with on a regular basis. So it had some authentic power. |

| I saw it on Broadway with Anne Twomey. I don't remember anything except at one point there was a trial scene. Twomey's ferociously brave performance got a deserved standing ovation (back when they meant something). | |

| I saw NUTS both off-Broadway at the WPA and on Broadway at the Biltmore. Anne Twomey gave a terrific performance full of histrionics. I think its relative failure and the movie's relative success point out some of the differences between the two media. The play took the audience on a wild ride but the denouement was not emotionally fulfilling, something a theatre audience expects after such an ordeal. The movie likewise did not affect us emotionally, but in a movie, the means can justify the lack of an end. |

| I agree with your assessment. Like many plays of its time and ours, it was couple of good scenes in search of a play. | |

| I have, in fact, seen nuts onstage. Numerous productions of "Equus", "Hair", "The Swan" etc. ;-) | |
