I saw NUTS both off-Broadway at the WPA and on Broadway at the Biltmore. Anne Twomey gave a terrific performance full of histrionics. I think its relative failure and the movie's relative success point out some of the differences between the two media.

The play took the audience on a wild ride but the denouement was not emotionally fulfilling, something a theatre audience expects after such an ordeal. The movie likewise did not affect us emotionally, but in a movie, the means can justify the lack of an end.

I agree with your assessment. Like many plays of its time and ours, it was couple of good scenes in search of a play.
