| It's interesting to me that you chose Sutton Foster (out many other famous actresses who've played Jo) to single out as your example regarding this casting notice. When I saw Foster in that production, it very much felt to me that she'd chosen to play Jo as a 19th Century proto-lesbian character at a time when there really wasn't terminology to describe such things. Her Jo seemed most comfortable dressed in male drag rescuing fair maidens. Her Jo seemed to have little interest in romance or sex with any of the prospects the story presents and only seemed to accept a man's proposal at the end with the greatest reluctance. |
