WAITRESS tonight
Posted by: robert_j 10:13 pm EST 01/08/19

Finally caught up with Waitress tonight and was glad to have made the trip. Sara Bareilles is really very special in this role, beautifully sung of course, but with that extra bit of magic that comes from watching an artist perform her own work. Brava.

Otherwise, the show feels like it has been running for a couple of years, the performances a bit too broad, the direction less sharp. Gavin Creel is still settling in but seems well cast in the role. He does not yet hit the heights of Dolly but I would be curious to see how he develops.

A very young crowd, which was a nice change from the usual. Clearly a lot of excitement for Bareilles, and well deserved.

Was Christopher Fitzgerald in? I would think he would be a good fit for this role. I saw the A.R.T. pre-Broadway run in Boston, which he did not participate in. I've been meaning to see the show again in New York but haven't gotten around to it yet. With Bareilles back again, this would be a good time to do it.

Yes, Christopher Fitzgerald was in it, which was a nice surprise. I realized I hadn’t seen him in years. There was a time when it felt like he was in everything.

WAITRESS is one of those shows (along with COME FROM AWAY) that fell through the cracks for me. I did not get around to it at the time and then it felt like it was too late. But with Bareilles and Creel I felt like this was the time to do it if it was going to happen at all.
