I am not a big fan of the book, gave it two readings and never got in its groove. But i loved GATZ. I felt its success laid in letting the prose speak for itself and in how the "characters" in the office who were reading the book were such different physical types from the characters they were reading. It let me concentrate on Fitzgerald's words without the need to examine the credibility of the casting (i.e. DiCaprio or Mia Farrow or Alan Ladd, etc) and also let me provide my own mental images as one does when one reads. Yes, it was a long day and I had the benefit of seeing it in a fairly intimate space in Los Angeles, but it stands out as an outstanding experience.
