At least the reviewer did not say DOLLY isn't Woke enough; He complains about the show being old(PRE 1960') .I worry for his nervous system if he ever learns that Wilder's original play MATCHMAKER was based on an earlier play THE MERCHANT OF YONKERS< which had been based on a German farce, that was sturdy enough for Tom Stoppard to do his own adaptation(Sorry-forget the name of the German play and Stoppard adaptation). What keeps Dolly going is not just the songs, but the Lighter than air Staging of GOWER CHAMPION, IMO it's Champion's staging that Makes the show. I saw productions 4 times . Once with Rogers, twice with Bailey and once with Midler .Bailey was > than Rogers and Midler was = to Bailey. Bleak was my puberty in Buffalo does sum in up. I'm guessing the reviewer fancies himself the John Simon of Arizona.
