I saw a regional production of Reasons to be Pretty several years ago, and afterwards, there was a talkback with LaBute, and I had the chance to talk to him one-on-one very briefly as well. I guess I should have known better than to have been surprised by this, but I was really struck by how normal he was. He's clearly deliberately provocative in his work, and from reading his plays and seeing some of his movies, I had an image of him in my head that had no relationship to what he was like on that day. In person, he was not provocative or defensive at all, had a very low-key energy, really listened to the questions, gave thoughtful answers, and was, well, normal. That was an educational experience for me.
