Exactly. There are plenty of trends, not just in theatre, that I find troublesome or disheartening. Just because I don’t partake in the trend doesn’t mean I can’t express my frustration or disappointment at the state of things. Noting that a person doesn’t have to see something doesn’t promote much of a discussion.

I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again. While one cannot say if something is good or not until one sees it, I think it’s valid to say when something is announced that it immediately does or doesn’t appeal to one. One thing we can’t know is how much inspiration is behind something. It may be ungenerous to automatically assume that producers are going for the easy tourist dollar. Perhaps a producer or creative has some really exciting vision or idea for the piece that will impress people. But I can certainly understand the knee jerk frustration since we seem to get so many frame by frame movie-to-musicals that don’t seem to have much behind them in the way of adaptation to the musical theatre genre.
