what you're saying is a lot simpler than it may seem. We want to see good shows produced and we don't want to see bad ones. Source material is not now and has never been a good metric for that. Movie adaptations are a way that lazy people make lazy theatre, but they are also a way that inspired people make inspired theatre. Making bad theatre is excusable (even important some would say). For lazy theatre, however, there is no excuse.
