No movie "needs" to be recreated on stage, and I would say most of the stage musicals (and plays) based on movies have been more adaptations than basically just slavish recreations of those movies with songs thrown in. Given the general agreement that some truly excellent stage musicals have been adapted from movies, I'm surprised that so many people automatically recoil every time a new one is announced.
