I'd argue that Mamma Mia! isn't actually a lazy musical. Not that I think it's great, because I don't. But it seems like the creators were inspired by an idea that hadn't really been done much before and was by no means a sure thing. I think the lazy musicals are all the ones that came after Mamma Mia! trying to mirror its success.
