I assume it's a reference to the melodrama "Mazeppa," which caused a stir in 1861 when the star (Ada Isaacs Menken) appeared to strip naked (although was actually wearing a body stocking). A few years ago, Molly Pope portrayed Menken in the play "Horseplay" which dramatized this moment (among many others in the really fascinating career of Menken).
